The Foundation of the Federal Bar Association is pleased to announce that Valerie Brummel of Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law is the 2017 recipient of the Robert A. McNew Law Student Scholarship.

The scholarship is awarded to a current law student who is a Federal Bar Association law student associate member in good standing. Applicants must exhibit professionalism and high character in their personal and professional lives as demonstrated in application materials. Brummel has exhibited these characteristics through her work experience, letters of recommendation, and personal achievements.

A graduate of the University of Michigan, Valerie Brummel has worked as a summer associate at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP, a judicial extern to Hon. Robert M. Dow of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois; and has secured a judicial clerkship with Hon. Milton Shadur of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois after her graduation in May 2017.

Brummel is a founder and the first president of the Federal Bar Association Law School Division at the Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law, through which she planned and executed educational events. She has a wealth of extracurricular experience, much of it focused on teaching and mentoring her peers.

She spent two summers in college working for U.S. Congressmen, giving her an opportunity to see a broader picture of the federal government at work and learning the power of the federal government to create change at a local level. Her reasons for pursuing a law degree include the ability to “influence law and policy to positively impact many people, using the law as a vehicle for positive change.”

The Foundation of the Federal Bar Association, chartered by Congress in 1954, provides funding to support community service or outreach projects that involve Federal Bar Association chapter participation. The Foundation provides support for the conduct of research, programs, education relating to the federal courts and federal jurisprudence, the structure and operation of the courts, the independence of the judiciary, federal jurisprudence, and the relevance of the rule of law to society.
